There are programs offered in or near Elim which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
