The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Kasaan are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medicines used in MAT being they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also get ancillary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been granted.
