Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Manley Hot Springs, AK.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Manley Hot Springs that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
