There are addiction programs available in or near Minto which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
