The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Nightmute are programs who are legally permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
