There are substance abuse programs available in or near Red Devil which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
