The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. Drug given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services aside from medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
