There are substance abuse programs available in or near St. Michael that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
