The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Alberta are programs which are officially permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medicine like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
