The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab centers in Columbia are programs who are officially permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab program is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of accreditation that was given.
