If someone is receiving outpatient detox they must go to the facility assisting them with their detox every day or at least five days a week in most situations. Outpatient detox services are either delivered in the daytime or evening, which makes it ideal for someone who needs to keep a normal school or work schedule. Certain facilities may also provide ways to get treatment in either regular outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detoxification services and prevent relapse.
A standard amount of time people participate in outpatient detox is about 7 days. A number of facilities use medication assisted detoxification approaches while others provide medication free detoxification services. At times when meds are needed to prevent life-threatening withdrawal problems, like with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are at times a problem. Otherwise, staff at the facility help clients handle their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are safely detoxified and stabilized.
While outpatient detoxification in Grant is more flexible for apparent reasons, a very serious disadvantage is that clients are at a higher risk of relapse due to the access they maintain to alcohol and drugs. Ideally, clients will transition into a log-term or short-term recovery program to deal with the reasons for their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is finished.
