Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Mc Williams, AL.

It is estimated that approximately 75% of clients at residential treatment centers for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is a fact that nicotine is an addictive substance and people in rehab for addiction should strive to be free from all addictive substances, this can present problems that make enforcing a smoking ban outweigh the advantages of such restrictions. Someone who is addicted to a substance as life threatening as drugs and alcohol might not agree to go to treatment if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so therefore, many programs in Mc Williams allow smoking with some restrictions, limitations and in designated areas of their facility.

Some rehab centers allow clients to smoke anywhere, so long as it is outside for instance. Some programs have a designated smoking area, and this is the only area that clients can smoke. Due to the fact that nicotine is addictive, even rehab centers that allow smoking usually offer alternatives to smoking if the client wants to quit, such as nicotine replacement gum, patches and prescriptions. There are also rehab centers that permit smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by incorporating this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by providing educational literature for clients to examine. In facilities which allow smoking in designated areas this is typically only authorized for clients, whereas staff are often banned from smoking at the facility or are encouraged to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded substance abuse treatment centers are obligated by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are enforced by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehabilitation programs have a little more leeway and don't have as many rules imposed on them, so may be more likely to offer designated areas for smoking.
