Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Mc Williams, AL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Mc Williams which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
