Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Phil Campbell, AL.

It is estimated that around 75% of clients at residential treatment facilities for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is true that nicotine is an addictive substance and people in any sort of treatment for addiction should endeavor to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can introduce problems that make enforcing a non-smoking facility outweigh the advantages of this restriction. Someone who is addicted to a substance as life threatening as drugs and alcohol might not agree to go to treatment if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so many facilities in Phil Campbell allow smoking with some restrictions, limitations and in designated areas of their facility.

Some programs permit clients to smoke anywhere, as long as it is outdoors for example. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, which is the only place that clients can smoke. Because nicotine is an addictive substance, even rehab facilities that allow smoking usually provide alternatives to smoking if the client would like to consider this as an option, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and prescriptions. There are also programs which permit smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by including this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by offering informational literature for clients to examine. In programs which permit smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only approved for clients, whereas staff are often banned from smoking at the facility or are asked to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded substance abuse rehab centers are bound by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are imposed by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private treatment facilities have a little more tolerance and don't have as many rules imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
