Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Mayflower, AR.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Mayflower that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
