The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Big Sur are programs which are legally allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of certification it has been given.
