The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in Elk are programs which are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.
An opioid rehab center can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation that was given.
