Mental health treatment is an important component of the treatment of drug & alcohol abuse disorders, because many individuals with substance abuse issues struggle with a co-occurring mental health issue. The necessity for dual diagnosis treatment has become more and more evident over the last few years, and many rehab centers in Fellows also provide dual diagnosis rehabilitation as part of a broader spectrum of services in addition to traditional and more progressive treatment for addiction.
In most cases, mental health treatment involves the initial diagnosis of the person's mental health issue, especially when substance abuse is involved. Oftentimes, the individual doesn't even realize they have an undiagnosed anxiety disorder or are struggling with depression until it is diagnosed in a mental health physician's office or treatment facility. Once diagnosed, actions can be put forth to help the individual become mentally stable, and this may include the use of specific counseling, therapies, and possibly medication or cessation of medication. In many cases however, clients suffering with a dual diagnosis are self-medicating with drugs and alcohol or possibly misusing their medications. In these instances, treatment staff and medical professionals can assess medication histories and propose actions which can be taken to eliminate the need for medication. People can be safely weaned off of medications which are doing more harm than good, or those which they tend to misuse.
