Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Hayfork, CA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Hayfork that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
