Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Lancaster that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
