The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in March Air Reserve Base are programs who are officially allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation that was granted.
