The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab facilities in Oakland are programs who are legally allowed to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.
An opioid rehabilitation facility can get their initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
