The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in Palo Alto are programs that are legally permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of accreditation it has been given.
