The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, along with any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which provides access to non-military health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can pick a primary care physician and get referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.

Through TRICARE, military members can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Sacramento. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other substance abuse recovery services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are restricted to no more than 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time limits as to how long military members are permitted to stay in rehab.
