The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in San Diego are programs who are officially permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.
An opioid treatment facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment center is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been granted.
