The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab facilities in Thousand Oaks are programs which are officially permitted to dispense the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services in addition to medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the type of accreditation that was given.
