Regular out-patient treatment is mostly a less costly choice to more comprehensive outpatient options or inpatient rehab, and is the least intense of formal substance abuse treatment around in Model. Some people are attending treatment for their first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and time commitment and logistically because of school, work or other obligations. In some cases, regular outpatient is a "step-down" from rehab in a more intense outpatient facility such as a partial hospitalization or inpatient center.
Regular out-patient rehabilitation services involve some kind of group and individual counseling services delivered once maybe twice per week. Programs which include a more diverse spectrum of services may include counseling (behavioral therapy) to assist with relapse prevention and dual diagnosis services to help address co-occurring addiction and mental health issues. How long a client remains involved in treatment can vary, and a person's progress can be judged every now and then and more rehab can be suggested contingent upon these evaluations.
In many situations, a regular outpatient rehab facility may be deficient in intensity for a client who is facing a severe alcohol and drug issue and has never gone to treatment previously or has relapsed following prior outpatient recovery.
