Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Baltic, CT.

There are programs offered in or near Baltic which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is encouraged.
