Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Kent, CT.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Kent which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
