Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - North Windham, CT.

There are programs offered in or near North Windham which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
