Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Salem, CT.

There are recovery programs offered in or near Salem which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
