Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Sterling, CT.

There are addiction programs available in or near Sterling which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is encouraged.
