There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Stratford which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
