The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid treatment programs, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Washington are programs who are officially permitted to distribute the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment program can get their initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was given.
