Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Westport, CT.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Westport which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
