Regular outpatient rehab is mostly a less expensive choice to more comprehensive outpatient centers or inpatient recovery, and is the least intense of formal substance abuse rehabilitation available in Mayo. Some clients are in treatment for their first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and commitment to time wise and scheduling because of work, school or other obligations. In some cases, regular outpatient is a step down from treatment in a more intensive outpatient facility like a partial hospitalization or in-patient center.
Regular outpatient treatment services offer group and individual counseling services occurring once maybe twice per week. Programs which offer a more diverse spectrum of services may include counseling (behavioral therapy) to assist with relapse prevention and dual diagnosis services to help address co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders. The length of time a client stays involved in recovery can vary, and a client's progress can be judged occasionally and an extension of rehab can be suggested based on these findings.
In many cases, a regular outpatient treatment program is going to be insufficient in intensity for a person who is dealing with a severe alcohol and drug problem and has never gone to recovery before or has fallen off the wagon following prior outpatient recovery.
