Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Honolulu, HI.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Honolulu that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
