Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Pearl Harbor, HI.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Pearl Harbor that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
