Smoking Allowed in Designated Area - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Grant, IA.

It is estimated that approximately 75% of clients at residential treatment facilities for drug and alcohol addiction are smokers. While it is a fact that nicotine is an addictive substance and clients in rehab for addiction should strive to be abstinent from all addictive substances, this can present problems that make enforcing a smoking ban outweigh the advantages of this restriction. Someone who is addicted to a substance as life threatening as drugs and alcohol might not get help if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so therefore, many facilities in Grant allow smoking with certain limitations, restrictions and in designated areas of their facility.

Some programs allow clients to smoke anywhere, so long as it is outdoors for instance. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, which is the only area that clients can smoke. Due to the fact that nicotine is an addictive substance, even treatment programs that allow smoking typically provide alternatives to smoking if the client wants to quit, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and prescriptions. There are also rehab centers which permit smoking in designated areas, but provide education on the health risks associated with smoking by including this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by providing informational literature for clients to examine. In programs which permit smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only approved for clients, whereas staff are sometimes banned from smoking at the facility or are asked to not smoke in front of clients.

Publicly funded drug treatment facilities are bound by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are enforced by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehabilitation programs have a little more tolerance and don't have as many rules and restrictions imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
