One of the out-patient treatment options for individuals in May struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some clinics and doctors are authorized to dispense specific meds to opioid addicted people, many of which are opioids themselves and are addiction. In low enough amounts however, the client doesn't feel high but also doesn't have acute cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med tried for this reason, but there are a few more options to select from.
Methadone is an opioid and is meant to be taken at an out-patient clinic licensed to administer the med, that is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The cost of the drug is approximately one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone which is only be dispensed in well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is approximately $300.00 monthly for the generic version of the med. There is also a type of buprenorphine containing the drug naloxone, which is a med which blocks the effects of opioids. A person taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken daily, and is priced around $450 a month. Naltrexone is another med used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it's an opioid blocker and isn't an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from feeling high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 per month.
