Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Brownstown, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Brownstown which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
