Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Clifton, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Clifton that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
