One of the out-patient treatment options for people in Cuba battling with opioid abuse and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some centers and doctors are authorized to administer specific meds to opioid addicted people, many of which are opioid-based also and are addiction. In low enough doses however, the user does not experience being high and also doesn't experience acute cravings and isn't experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication administered for this sole purpose, but there are a few more choices currently to pick from.
Methadone is an opioid and is meant to be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the drug, which is taken on a daily basis as a pill or liquid. The price of the drug is about $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be administered in well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is around just under $300 monthly for the generic version of the med. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a med that reverses the effects of opiates. Someone consuming this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken daily, and is priced around $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it's an opiate blocker and isn't an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from experience being high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 per month.
