Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.
These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Joliet which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
