Licensed clinics and doctors are certified to dispense certain medications to opioid dependent people, many that are opioid-based also and are addictive. In low amounts however, the individual does not experience being high and also does not have intense cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication administered for this sole purpose, but there are other options to choose from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient clinic certified to dispense the drug, that is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is around one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is in pill form often taken one day on, one day off. But unlike Methadone that can only be given in highly structured clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is approximately $300.00 per month for the generic of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which blocks the effects of opioids. An individual taking this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken daily, and costs approximately $450 per month. Naltrexone is another medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned here it is an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 monthly.
