There are 3 separate kinds of mental health treatment, including residential, outpatient, and hospital inpatient. Some individuals who may need assistance for a mental issue may desire an outpatient approach due to their responsibilities or due to the stigma they'd like to avoid associated with their problem. Many clients can still maintain a normal work or school day and receive outpatient mental health care with 100% privacy and discretion.
Outpatient mental health programs are usually found in community health centers, private offices, or hospitals in National Stock Yards. The intensity of outpatient mental health care can be different from facility to facility, but can range from daily treatment to attendance a few days a week or more. An outpatient mental health program will do a complete evaluation of the client's medical history, both physical and mental, including their illicit drug and prescription drug history. Psychological testing is also a standard procedure, and clinicians and medical staff will design a plan of care that may include group therapy, marriage or couples counseling, family therapy, individual psychotherapy, etc. If the client requiring treatment also has a co-occurring disorder such as a drug problem, most outpatient mental health programs are prepared to handle this dual diagnosis.
