Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Penfield, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Penfield which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
