Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Peru, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Peru which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
