Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Plymouth, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Plymouth that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
