One of the out-patient rehabilitation options for clients in Putnam who are battling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an outpatient clinic licensed to administer the med, which is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is about one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that is only be given in highly structured clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about $300 /month for the generic version of the med. There is also a type of buprenorphine containing the drug naloxone, that is a drug which blocks the effects of opioids. Someone taking this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken on a daily basis, and is priced around $450 per month. Naltrexone is an additional drug taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it is an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents an individual from experience being high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 monthly.
